Chaukor (pronounced chalk-ore) is a rectangular shawl featuring a grid-like, textured lace pattern. The stitch pattern (worked over a multiple of 15 stitches and 18 rows) was inspired by the beautiful tie-and-dye fabrics of Rajasthan, India, and also the state’s breathtaking architecture – haveli windows in particular.
The pattern includes both written instructions and a chart.
To knit the shawl, you cast on a total of 81 stitches, including 6 border stitches (3 on either edge) that are knit on every row and 75 stitches (15 x 5) between the borders that are worked in the Chaukor stitch pattern.
Yarn – Two skeins of Cascade Heritage Solids or approximately 850 yards of any fingering weight yarn that blocks well and has good stitch definition. I used a little less than 2 skeins of the Cascade Heritage Solids in the “Moss” color (5612).
Needles:
- US size 6 (4 mm) for knitting
- US size 7 (4.5 mm) for casting on loosely (optional).

Instructions to knit the scarf:
Loosely cast on 81 stitches (75 pattern stitches and 6 border stitches – 3 on either side) using the long-tail cast on and the larger needle (or your preferred cast-on method).
Switch to smaller needles.
- Knit 6 rows
- Row 7 – knit 3 stitches, place marker (PM); work Row 1 of the Chaukor stitch pattern five times, placing stitch markers after every repeat; knit the last 3 stitches. 6 markers placed.
From this point on, the first and last 3 stitches will always be knit to form a garter stitch border, and the Chaukor stitch pattern will be worked over the center 75 stitches (15 x 5).
- Row 8 – On the next row, knit 3 stitches, slip marker; work Row 2 of the stitch pattern five times, slipping markers as you go; knit the last 3 stitches.
- Continue to work rows 3-18 of the Chaukor stitch pattern between the garter stitch borders, as established above.
- Repeat these 18 pattern rows 26 more times (or fewer or more, depending on how long you want the shawl)
To end:
- Knit 3 rows (the last row you knit will be a right side row).
- Loosely cast off all stitches knit-wise on the wrong side.
Block to desired measurements. Weave in ends.
I love this 🙂
Thanks so much! 🙂
In the stitch pattern do you always repeat rows 1 & 2 5 times or just once for each pattern repeat?
Hi Judy. You work the 15 pattern stitches in all rows, including rows 1 and 2, five times between the border stitches. And you knit row by row, meaning you move from row 1 to 18, and then start again at 1, and so on. Hope that helps! 🙂
Happy knitting!
merci et bonne continuation
Thanks so much, Amel!

I’m confused by the second instruction (after Knit 6 rows). Do you knit row 1 of the Chaukor stitch pattern 5 times or do you just do the instruction 5 times. It says work row 1 5 times. Please clarify for me. Thanks much.
You work the 15 row-1 stitches 5 times, (on the same row), and then knit the last 3 sts.
Hope that helps! I should rewrite that part so it’s clearer.
Thanks. It now makes sense. The instructions are a tad confusion. Thanks for the clarification!
Glad that helped! Happy knitting 🙂
I always come back to this beautiful scarf, I’ve never followed a pattern, well not a hard one,
I truly do appreciate the solid symmetry of the grid, the overall feminity
Thank you so much, Nancy! 🙂
I have now started this four times and there is something really wrong with the pattern. I’m a very experienced knitter (over 50 years of experience) and the directions are wrong. You need to correct them.
Hi Evelyn,
I’m sorry if the directions are confusing! Which is the problem row?
