Chaukor (pronounced chalk-ore) is a rectangular shawl featuring a grid-like, textured lace pattern. The stitch pattern (worked over a multiple of 15 stitches and 18 rows) was inspired by the beautiful tie-and-dye fabrics of Rajasthan, India, and also the state’s breathtaking architecture – haveli windows in particular.

The pattern includes both written instructions and a chart.

To knit the shawl, you cast on a total of 81 stitches, including 6 border stitches (3 on either edge) that are knit on every row and 75 stitches (15 x 5) between the borders that are worked in the Chaukor stitch pattern.

Yarn – Two skeins of Cascade Heritage Solids or approximately 850 yards of any fingering weight yarn that blocks well and has  good stitch definition. I used a little less than 2 skeins of the Cascade Heritage Solids in the “Moss” color (5612).

Needles:

  • US size 6 (4 mm) for knitting
  • US size 7 (4.5 mm) for casting on loosely (optional).

Notions:

  • Tapestry needle to weave in ends
  • 6 stitch markers (if using)
  • Blocking pins (and wires, if using)

Gauge in pattern stitch (after blocking) :

  • 4 inches = 24 stitches and 28 rows

Finished Dimensions:

  • Length – 71 inches, Width – 13 inches

Instructions to knit the scarf:

Loosely cast on 81 stitches (75 pattern stitches and 6 border stitches – 3 on either side) using the long-tail cast on and the larger needle (or your preferred cast-on method).

Switch to smaller needles.

  • Knit 6 rows
  • Row 7 – knit 3 stitches, place marker (PM); work Row 1 of the Chaukor stitch pattern five times, placing stitch markers after every repeat; knit the last 3 stitches. 6 markers placed.

From this point on, the first and last 3 stitches will always be knit to form a garter stitch border, and the Chaukor stitch pattern will be worked over the center 75 stitches (15 x 5).

  • Row 8 – On the next row, knit 3 stitches, slip marker; work Row 2 of the stitch pattern five times, slipping markers as you go; knit the last 3 stitches.
  • Continue to work rows 3-18 of the Chaukor stitch pattern between the garter stitch borders, as established above.
  • Repeat these 18 pattern rows 26 more times (or fewer or more, depending on how long you want the shawl)

To end:

  • Knit 3 rows (the last row you knit will be a right side row).
  • Loosely cast off all stitches knit-wise on the wrong side.

Block to desired measurements. Weave in ends.

    • Hi Judy. You work the 15 pattern stitches in all rows, including rows 1 and 2, five times between the border stitches. And you knit row by row, meaning you move from row 1 to 18, and then start again at 1, and so on. Hope that helps! 🙂

      Happy knitting!

  2. I’m confused by the second instruction (after Knit 6 rows). Do you knit row 1 of the Chaukor stitch pattern 5 times or do you just do the instruction 5 times. It says work row 1 5 times. Please clarify for me. Thanks much.

  3. I always come back to this beautiful scarf, I’ve never followed a pattern, well not a hard one,
I truly do appreciate the solid symmetry of the grid, the overall feminity

  4. I have now started this four times and there is something really wrong with the pattern. I’m a very experienced knitter (over 50 years of experience) and the directions are wrong. You need to correct them.
