Easy Yoga Socks

Suitable for a beginner knitter.

Yarn: 6 ply sport-weight sock yarn. 40 grams.

Needles: 3.0 mm or 2.75 mm double-point needles, or needle of your choice for working in the round.

Gauge: not too important, adjust you needle size to achieve a pleasing fabric and a looser or closer fit according to preference.  Rib knit is very stretchy.

Size: Woman’s medium. For different sizes, adjust number of stitches more or fewer in multiples of 8.

Notes: Rib knit throughout is acceptable for a yoga sock, the ribbing under foot at the arch is not uncomfortable.

Sample sock pictured was made on 2.75 mm dpn, using Regia 6 ply Volcano Color #6838.

Make 2.

Cuff and Leg:

Loosely cast on 48 sts onto dpn’s.  Arrange stitches evenly over 3 needles (Needle 1 – 16 sts, Needle 2 – 16 sts, Needle 3 – 16 sts).  Join in the round, taking care not to twist. Your working needle is Needle 4.

Work K2, P2 rib pattern one round. Place a locking stitch marker between needles 1 and 3 to indicate beginning of round.

Continue established 2×2 rib pattern for 12 cm.

Heel:

Heel opening will use half the stitches, and will be centered in the K2 P2 pattern, between the purl columns. Move the locking stitch marker up to the top of the same column of purl stitches between Needles 1 and 3.

Slip purl-wise the last purl stitch from the end of the round from Needle 3 onto your working needle, Needle 4. At beginning of Needle 1 on new round: K1 loosely, pass the end-of-round purl over the knit.  Loosely knit the next stitch, bind off knit over knit. Continue working each stitch in pattern and binding off for a total of 24 bound-off stitches. 24 sts remain.  The last stitch bound off stitch will be a purl.  Continue working to end of the round in established 2×2 rib pattern, the first stitch will be a knit.  Your work will now be on just two needles.

Next round: Take up a third needle. Turn work. Using the cable-cast-on method, knit between the last two stitches on Needle 2, placing the new stitch onto the left needle. Continue to knit into between each new stitch and the previous stitch, for a total of 24 sts new stitches cast on. At some point during the cast on, when your Needle 2 has too many stitches to fit comfortably, you will transfer the newly cast on stitches onto their own Needle 3, and will once again use a fourth needle as your working needle.

Turn work. Check that the newly cast-on stitches are not twisted. Tugging firmly, closely work the next stitch on Needle 1 (a purl), this joins in the round once again.

Work in rib pattern as established [K2, P2] to the last 3 sts, K2, P1.  48 sts.

Next round: work the first stitch (a purl) on Needle 1, then transfer it purl-wise back onto the end of round Needle 3.  This restores the the K2,P2 pattern.

Work the newly cast on stitches in rib pattern: [K2, P2]. Continue to end of round in established pattern.

Foot:

Work established K2 P2 rib pattern for 8 cm.

After a couple of rounds, you may reorganize the stitches to return to an even number on each needle.

Bind off loosely.

Weave in ends.
