FREE PATTERN - warm waves poncho1 - Ravin Sekai Designs

I’ve been working on this little gem for awhile now. And, I’ve been SO EXCITED to unveil it. I first had the idea last spring, and I just couldn’t get it out of my head until I got started on it. In the beginning, it was supposed to just be a poncho. But I couldn’t decide if I wanted it to come together in the back or on the side. Then, as I knit it, I started to realize how gorgeous it would be as a wrap or super scarf. After spending some time lamenting to my husband about the problem, he suggested “why don’t you just put buttons on it?” Why indeed! He’s just so smart! (don’t tell him I said so, though).

So, in other words, this garment is super special. With the addition of buttons, you can wear it in two different styles of poncho, as a shawl or wrap, and a scarf! OH BOY! (You should know me and my love for versatility by now).

This Poncho also uses a Provisional cast on (PCO). I use the crochet on PCO, but you can use any type that you’re comfortable with. This PCO makes it so that the lace border along the bottom and back are all facing the same way when the buttons are fastened. I know a lot of people might not be comfortable with this cast on, BUT, like the Riona’s Diamonds scarf, this is a great time to try out some new (or old and unused) skills. However, if you are not comfortable with this method, there are instructions on how to make the poncho wrap by knitting it straight. Your poncho will have a bit of a different look, but it will still be lovely!

For my Warm Waves Poncho Wrap, I used Lion Brand Yarns Mandala Baby. It took me about 2.5 - 2.75 cakes to finish my wrap. But, I did cut some of the color portions out when I thought the color was getting too long. Some substitutes for this yarn would be Paintbox Yarns Baby DK, Plymouth Yarns Dreambaby DK, or Bernat Baby Sport. Or, of course, the regular Mandala yarn from Lion Brand. (I am not affiliated with Lion Brand, Plymouth Yarn, Love Crafts or Yarnspirations in any way, I just like the yarn).

Second Half:

Unravel the provisional co and place live stitches back on to needles MAKE SURE you are putting the same number of st back on your needles, in the PCO you lose one st, so you need to make sure you account for that loss. I tend to CO one extra st, then get rid of that st by k2tog after knitting a few rows. However, you can also accomplish this by making one st after placing the live st from the provisional co back onto your needles. The Second half will be very slightly offset by one st, but it isn’t noticeable.  Repeat Row 12 then rep Row 1 - Row 279.

Construction:

warmwavesconstruction
  1. Fold piece in half with fold on the right.

  2. Starting 11 inches from the fold, sew on buttons evenly spaced along the top edge. Make sure you sew the buttons in a position that they are across from a lace row as the lace on the opposite side becomes the buttonholes for the buttons.and choose buttons that will pass through the lace on the opposite side, but aren’t small enough to easily slip back through.
