The Effortless Scarf

Accessories, Patterns

I call this scarf the “effortless scarf” for two reasons; it’s super easy to knit and great for beginners, plus it’s an effortless and easy style to wear for all your spring, fall and winter outings. It’s nice and long, so you can wrap it a couple times for those extra cold days, or just leave it loose!

This scarf pattern is easy to make adjustments to depending on the yarn you’d like to use as well. I used the petite wool from We Are Knitters in forest green for the scarf pictured here. If you haven’t shopped at We Are Knitters before, you can use my referral code MGMMLUU7C get $12 off.

If you want to use different yarn, try to find something with a similar gauge; otherwise, you can also increase or decrease your needle size or number of cast on stitches to get the right length/width. In the end, it’s up to you how long you want the scarf to be! The gauge for the wool I used is 12 stitches in 16 rows = a 4″x4″ square. Try doing a test knit of your yarn of choice to be sure that the gauge is similar.

When you’re finished the pattern, your scarf should measure approximately 8″ wide and 90″ long. This scarf is knit in garter stitch, which means you knit every row – it’s that easy! The basic stitch makes this pattern great for beginners.

Materials

  • 8mm/ US size 11 needles
  • 300 grams of yarn, approximately 420 metres/ 459 yards length
  • A knitter’s sewing needle

Pattern

  1. Using your 8mm needles, cast on 30 stitches.
  2. Knit in garter stitch for 370 rows/to desired length (it’s easiest to just measure your scarf from time to time, as opposed to counting every row).
  3. Once your scarf is 90″ long (or your desired length), cast off all stitches.
  4. Weave in your ends using a knitter’s sewing needle. Voila!

Once you’re finished, take a picture and post it on Instagram, I’d love to see it! Don’t forget to tag #Woolen_things_ .
