Today we are proud to bring you a free knitting pattern for a really easy to knit headband.

The band itself is possibly the easiest knitting pattern in the world! It is an ideal project for a beginner knitter as it uses only the garter stitch. It is a great way to practice casting on and off, and working in a uniform tension.

The headband is shown here decorated with a flower. This flower is also pretty easy to knit – it is all done in one piece so no fiddly attaching of separate petals.

If you don’t want to knit the flower, you can decorate the headband with a pompom, a button or a store bought flower or bow.

Easy headband knitting pattern

The headband in the photo was knit with a two colour, marled yarn (We Are Knitters The Petite Wool). You could alternatively hold 2 strands of any DK/8 ply yarn together.  This would give an almost identical look. 

Materials:

• Pair of 7mm knitting needles.
• 50g chunky yarn.
• Scissors and needle for sewing up.

Size and tension:

Over 2 cm in garter stitch – 3 stitches and 4 rows.

Width 10cm, length 40cm (adjustable).

Instructions: 

Cast on 12 stitches.

Knit in garter stitch until headband is desired length.

40cm is about right for an average adult head.

Cast off in K.

Sew up seam and sew in loose ends.

One piece flower knitting pattern

The flower in the photo was made with the stunning Japanese Noro Kureyon yarn. You can use any aran or chunky thickness yarn to make your flower.

Materials:

• Pair of 5mm knitting needles.
• 20g aran thickness yarn.

Size and tension:

Approx 11cm diameter.

Tension not important.

Instructions: 

Cast on 6 stitches. leave long yarn tail ends for casting on and off.

Repeat rows 1-14 3 times more and rows 1-12 once.

Then cast off all stitches, break yarn and fasten off.

With one tail end, join the petal edges and with the other end work a running stitch along what will be the centre of the flower.  Pull this to gather and secure on the reverse side.

Sew in loose ends or use the ends to sew onto headband.

You could use a pompom or button as a centrepiece for the flower. As you can see, this one looks really sweet with a wooden hand made with love button.

You can attach the flower to your headband either by glue or sewing on. If you use a button in the middle, you can run your thread through the flower an attach it this way.
