“The purpose of Art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”

Who Are We?
Penistone Arts Week belongs to the people of Penistone and surrounding areas to express and enjoy all aspects of the art world. This festival embraces local and national talent for all the people of Penistone to celebrate art in all of its formats, including music, literature, drama, film and art.
This beautiful painting of St. John’s Church in the centre of Penistone is by Suze Mary and features in the PAW 2024 calendar.
How it all began…
In the Summer of 2017 Chrissie Yates invited Barbara Lee, Councillor David Griffin and Brian Barnsley to discuss a possible Arts event and that’s how Penistone Arts Week began.
Our first Arts week was in the third week of March 2018 when the wonderful Willy Russell (see photo above left with Chrissie) appeared for us at Penistone Paramount. He was introduced by Milly Johnson (shown in the photo above right with Chrissie) and was interviewed by Educating Yorkshire’s Johnny Mitchell. Willy donated his fee to the Barry Hines statue which added even more delight to all who had planned this event. The last photo shows the original Penistone Arts Week, L-R: David Griffin, Willy Russell, Chrissie Yates, Milly Johnson, Barbara Lee, Jonny Mitchell.
Events over the years have seen Ian MacMillan (photo above middle), Dai Bradley (of Billy Casper fame), Steve Knightley (of ‘Show of Hands’ fame), all appear at The Paramount.
“The Arts Week has now become an eagerly anticipated yearly event with more and more of Penistone’s incredibly creative and talented individuals coming forward and displaying their unique talents.”
Chrissie Yates
Lighting Up Our High Street
As part of this annual tradition, the High Street undergoes a metamorphosis, with the coordinated efforts of the Penistone Arts Collective and local stores which culminates in a visually stunning display that captivates residents and visitors alike. This initiative goes beyond mere aesthetic enhancement; it symbolizes a shared commitment to cultivating a lively and welcoming atmosphere within our community.
Upcoming Events
Whether one is a fervent art enthusiast, a family seeking wholesome entertainment, or an individual with a penchant for cultural exploration, the breadth of events ensures that everyone can find something that resonates with their personal preferences. The festival stands as a testament to the inclusivity of the arts, celebrating diversity and catering to the varied tastes that collectively define our vibrant community.
The annual ‘Penistone Artist of the Year’ event is on Sunday, March 24th. This En Plein Air competition invites artists of all backgrounds to embrace the elements, transforming the picturesque surroundings of Penistone into a canvas of their unique interpretation. It’s an opportunity for artists to showcase their talent, capturing the essence of our landscape in diverse and inspiring ways.
Penistone Arts Collective Calendar
In order to raise funds for this year’s event The Penistone Arts Collective designed a 2024 calendar which was sold throughout Penistone stores, cafes and venues. Everyone who purchased the calendar was supporting the sustainability of this much loved event raising £1900. The artists took inspiration from the natural beauty and historical significance of Penistone to produce a unique collection of work.
Their artistic endeavors grace the landscape of Penistone year-round, leaving an indelible mark on the visual tapestry of our community. Notably, their creations find a captivating home in Hacketts, where a dedicated resident art gallery serves as a vibrant showcase for their work. This gallery space not only offers a curated glimpse into the artists’ ongoing contributions but also transforms Hacketts into a living, breathing art haven.
As another gift to our community members of Penistone Arts Collective will be leaving little gifts around Penistone during arts week, so keep your eyes peeled!

Bringing The Arts To Your Child’s Door
Now, more than ever, as we navigate the challenges besetting our world, creativity emerges as the guiding star illuminating the path to progress. It beckons individuals, groups, and governments alike to embark on a journey of innovation, forging new pathways and sculpting bold solutions to the dilemmas we confront. Our children are our future and that of our very existence. In order to prepare them to take on the challenges ahead, creativity is the key to expanding their imagination to solve the issues ahead.
According to the International Child Art Foundation, “Research indicates that a child who is exposed to the arts acquires a special ability to think creatively, be original, discover, innovate, and create intellectual property—key attributes for individual success and social prosperity in the twenty-first century.”
