Irish Hiking Hat - Improved
I used a 24” size 8 (5 mm) circular needle.
For the crown, a set of double pointed size 8 needles or two circular size 8 needles may be used instead. (I only used the one circular set. And used a 6 mm straight needle for the cables.)
I started with 50 g, of worsted weight yarn and had a handful of yarn left over.
I used 100% Peruvian Highland Wool.
Cast on 96 stitches. Join in a circle, being careful not to twist. I used a cable cast on, because I didn’t have a lot of yarn, but if you have enough yarn a long tail cast on is much faster.
K=knit
P=purl
K2 tog= knit two together
P2 tog= purl two together
Row 1, K2, P2, (place a marker on last stitch) **The hat pictured is reversed here it’s pictured as (P2,K2) for rows 1-4, the marker still in the same place**
Rows 2-4, K2, P2
This hat fits to mid ear on a 23.5” head. If you would like this hat longer add a few more rows here. (Or you can add them to the next cable section.)
Rows 5-11, (P2, K2, P2, K6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Row 12, (P2, K2, P2, Cable 6F) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Cables: They look harder than they really are. Here is a picture to help you:
Repeat rows 5-12 until you have 3 cable rows (depending on the size of head you want the hat to fit), you can vary this and add more to make a longer hat. Make sure you end with a cable row.
Decreasing:
Decrease row 1, (P2, K2, P2 tog, place marker, K6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
(You will have 8 markers around the decrease of the hat. The markers will help you to keep track of where to decrease.)
Decrease row 2, (P2, K2, P1, K6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 3, (P2, K2, P2tog, K5) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 4, (P2, K2, K6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 5, (P2, K2 tog, K6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 6, (P2, K1, K6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 7, (P2tog, K1, K6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 8, (P1, K1, Cable 6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 9, (K2 tog, K6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 10, (K1, K6) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 11, (K2 tog, K5) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 12, (K2 tog, K4) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 13, (K2 tog, K3) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 14, (K2 tog, K2) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 15, (K2 tog, K1) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 16, (K2 tog) (You should end up with 8 sets).
Decrease row 17, (K2 tog) (You should end up with 4 sets).
Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. With a darning (yarn) needle, thread the yarn through the remaining stitches and pull tightly. Weave the end around the circle on the inside of that hat, this will pull the point down.
