Twisted Edge Shawlette


A pretty neck shawl with a tightly twisted cable edge

Yarn: Intrepid Tulips Sock [75% superwash wool, 25% nylon; 400 yds (366 m) per 100g],

1 skein (“Britain” colorway modeled)
OR Greenwood Fiberworks BFL roving, 4oz spun to fingering weight, ~380 yds (a unique “Watercolor” colorway modeled)
Materials: US size 4 (3.5mm) circular or straight, in whatever length you prefer
cable needle
yarn needle to weave in ends
Gauge: 24 stitches per 4 in. (2.5 cm), 40 rows per 4 in. (2.5cm)
Finished Size: 60” long, 9” high in middle
Abbreviations:
m1 = make one stitch by lifting the strand between the stitch on the left needle and the stitch on the right needle and knitting through the back loop
pm = place marker
sm = slip marker
C3L = slip first three stitches from left needle onto cable needle and hold in front; knit next three stitches; knit three stitches from cable needle
p = purl
k = knit

Directions:
Cast on 6 stitches
Increase section:
Row 1: knit
Row 2: purl
Row 3: kf&b, k5
Row 4: p6, k1
Row 5: k1, m1, pm, C3L
Row 6: p6, sm, k2
Row 7: knit to marker, sm, knit to end
Row 8: p6, sm, k2
Row 8: k2, m1, sm, C3L
Row 10: p6, sm, knit to end
Row 11: knit to marker, sm, knit to end
Row 12: p6, sm, knit to end
Row 13: knit to marker, m1, sm, C3L
Row 14: p6, sm, knit to end
Repeat Rows 11-14 until there are 50 cabled twists (56 stitches)
                       
Even section:
Row 1: knit to marker, sm, knit to end
Row 2: p6, sm, knit to end
Row 3: knit to marker, sm, C3L
Row 4: p6, sm, knit to end
Repeat Rows 1-4 until there are 36 cabled twists. Placing a piece of string or removable
stitch marker in the middle, right after the 18th twist, makes counting easier.

Decrease section:
Row 1: knit to marker, sm, knit to end
Row 2: p6, sm, knit to end
Row 3: knit to two stitches before marker, k2tog, sm, C3L
Row 4: p6, sm, knit to end
Repeat Rows 1-4 until there are 49 cabled twists; 7 stitches remain;
Repeat Rows 1-2, remove marker
For last cable, slip first stitch onto right needle; slip next 3 stitches to cable needle and
hold in front; slip first stitch back onto left needle; k2tog and then knit last 2 stitches
on left needle; knit the 3 stitches on the cable needle to finish the row.
Purl one more row, then bind off
Weave in ends
