Hello all and happy (almost) Wednesday. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve written anything. I went on a ten-day visit to Kitchener, Ontario to help my boyfriend get settled into his new place. It was my first visit to Canada and it was nice to have some chilly weather. The people were so welcoming and I think fries with gravy might be a new craving.
I also haven’t been writing because I wasn’t feeling motivated to knit since I’m trying to empty out my yarn basket. I’m anxious to create my own patterns too, but sometimes they don’t work out the way you think they should. But after my little vacation I’m ready to write again about my first pattern: some chunky mermaid mittens!!
Sometimes it’s difficult to find a simple mitten pattern online so I made some gauntlet mittens to understand the method and then made my own mittens creating as I went. This pattern makes a large pair of women’s or medium men’s mittens. If you would like to make a smaller pair, just adjust your gauge accordingly.
Right: Mermaid Mittens
Mermaid Mittens:
Materials:
• 3 balls medium weight yarn of contrasting blue tones (strung together)
• size 11 double pointed needles
• small stitch holder
• scissors
• measuring tape
Directions:
Cast on 20 stitches
Distribute stitches evenly onto 3 double pointed needles
Cuff ribbing:
K2 P2 for 13 rounds
Mitten:
Knit for 5 rounds
Increase first stitch, knit until one stitch remains, increase one stitch (22 stitches)
Knit one round even
Increase first stitch, knit until one stitch remains, increase last stitch (24 stitches)
Knit 2 rounds even
Knit until 3 stitches remain, then slip next 6 stitches onto stitch holder for thumb
Cast on 2 stitches, knit until end of round (20 stitches)
Knit 3 1/2 inches or until top of mitten reaches 1/4 below the end of your longest finger
Decrease for top of mitten:
K2tog, K1 for one round (13 stitches remain)
Knit one round even
K2tog for one round (7 stitches remain)
Cut yarn and pull tail through 7 remaining stitches, finishing and tying off inside mitten.
Thumb:
Pick up 3 stitches from hand and put 6 stitches on stitch holder onto the needle (9 stitches)
Distribute stitches evenly onto 3 double pointed needles
Join ball of yarn and knit in the round until thumb is 2 1/2 inches long, or 1/8 inch below the tip of your thumb
K2tog around (5 stitches remain)
Cut yarn and pull tail through 5 remaining stitches, finishing and tying off inside mitten.
Finishing:
Weave in any loose ends
Make second mitten.
