Basic Skirt and Top for Tonner and similiar 16” dolls (e.g. Ellowyne etc.)

Yes, it is with the Tonner doll again. I have a new dollieh and she needs clothes 😉 Today we have a lovely ensemble of basics – a long skirt (easily adaptable for shorter skirts) with a matching short sleeved shirt. The skirt was strongly inspired by a lovely free pattern for Monster High (German pattern though, look for “Kleid in zwei Varianten” on ravelry. The matching circle shrug was made according to this lovely and easy free pattern (project notes) from ravelry. Well, then on to the pattern for the skirt and shirt! Materials:

  • fingering weight yarn (4-ply)
  • DPNS 2.5 mm (for the shrug straight or circular needles 3 mm)
  • EDIT: Depending on how tightly you knit, you might want to go up to needle 3mm at least for the shirt for Ellowyne dolls…

SKIRT Cast on 40 st., divide onto 4 DPN and join to knit in the round. Let a lengths of yarn or a marker mark the beginning of round.

  • Rounds 1-4: knit in ribbing (k1p1)
  • Round 5: knit
  • Round 6: 1st increase round. On your first needle (right back part) knit to last stitch, M1 (make 1), knit last stitch on needle. On second needle, knit first st., M1, knit. Third needle=as first needle; fourth needle=as second needle.
  • Round 7: Knit
  • Round 8= increase round as round 6 (=12 st per needle [48 st])
  • If you want a wider skirt, you can make more increases or other increases, e.g. kfb each second stitch etc. etc., however, the number has to be divisible by 4 (for hem)
  • Knit to desired length.
  • For the bottom hem, k1*p2, k2* until end of round, end on p2, k1
  • knit in pattern for 6-8 rounds
  • in the next round, k1, *p2, k1, M1, k1* until end of round, end on p2, k1, M1.
  • Knit in pattern for 2 rounds.
  • Bind off in pattern.

SHIRT Cast on 64 st. and divide onto four DPN, join to knit in the round. We will start from the collar, working the standard raglan increase:

  • (Note: if you wish, cast on and knit collar rounds on 2mm dpns)
  • rounds 1-4: k1tbl, p1 ribbing
  • round 5: knit
  • round 6: *k7, YO, k2, YO, K7* repeat around on each needle
  • round 7: knit (the YO are knitted purlwise to avoid forming holes) (72 st)
  • round 8: *k8, YO, k2, YO, K8* repeat around on each needle
  • round 9: knit (the YO are knitted purlwise to avoid forming holes) (80 st)
  • round 10: knit
  • round 11: here we bind off for the sleeves: k10 – bind off 19 – k22 – bind off 19, k10 (42 “live” stitches)
  • round 12: knit, close the round again and knit the last stitch before and first stitch after sleeves bind off together (through the back loop) =40 st in the round
  • You can now knit to desired length, or, if like me you like the upper garment to have a little give for the skirt, under the bust or at waist level increase (as with the skirt, see above) to 11 st per needle=44 st
  • For bottom hem, work ribbing (k1p1) for 4-6 rounds.
  • Bind off using a slightly stetchy bind off of your choice. I used the following: k1, YO, p1, bind off the purl st. with the YO, bind of that with the knit st, k1, bind off, YO, p1, etc (basically, YO before each purl stitch and bind the purl stitch off with that, otherwise proceed as with a standard bind off)

You could of course also knit as a dress, start as with the shirt, at the hips increase to 12 st. per needle, knit to desired length, etc.
