Aww, Hat (or, the Hawkeye Hat)
For those wanting to show their love for everyone’s favorite orphan raised by carnies fighting with a stick and string from the Paleolithic era.
And when I say, “This looks great,” I promise you, it feels even better!
A slightly slouchy hat inspired by Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye run with Marvel Comics and by jenamapola‘s Barton/Bishop hat.
Yarn: DK weight, roughly 90 yards of white and roughly 30–40 yards each of dark and light purple. I used Knit Picks Swish DK in white, sugar plum, and eggplant.
Needles: Cast on with US 7/4.5 mm needles; switch to US 8/5 mm needles for the body of the hat.
Notions: Marker, row counter, tapestry needle
Instructions:
CO 104 stitches on size 7 needles with white yarn and join in the round.
Ribbing: *k2p2* for 10 rounds
Switch to size 8 needles and knit in stockinette for 15 rounds.
Begin using dark purple yarn and knit in stockinette for 12 rounds.
Begin using white yarn and knit in stockinette for 15 rounds.
Begin using light purple yarn and begin decrease rounds as follows. (Switch to DPNs or Magic Loop method as needed.)
Row 1 (and all odd rows): Knit all stitches
Row 2: *k6, k2tog*
Row 4: *k5, k2tog*
Row 6: *k4, k2tog*
Row 8: *k3, k2tog*
Row 10: *k2, k2tog*
Row 12: *k1, k2tog*
Row 14: *k2tog*
Row 16: *k2tog* until three stitches remain, k1, k2tog
Break yarn and thread through live stitches. Weave in all ends, block if desired, enjoy…and watch out for the Tracksuit Draculas!
Note: This pattern is easily modifiable for your needs! Change the width of each stripe as much as you like, cast on with smaller or larger needles to adjust the fit of the ribbing, and add or subtract rows in the body to create more or less slouch. You can also cast on fewer stitches to get a smaller hat; just adjust the length of the body and the decreases accordingly.
