The Mia Scarf
This scarf has a very simple origin story. I am very much a gift giving knitter, which I think a lot of us crafty people are. If you’re like me, you enjoy, not only the act of creating, but gifting those creations to others to enjoy. What’s better than seeing an item you worked on for hours and put tons of your heart into being worn by someone you love?
So, every Christmas, (and most birthdays, Father's days, Mother's days… you get the picture) I knit or crochet for just about everyone in my life. I try to make everyone something special that suits their personalities. Sometimes I even take requests. (It makes for a busy holiday season, let me tell you!)
For Christmas a few years back, I decided to make my good friend a new scarf. She gave me a few ideas of what she liked in scarves and chose a color she loved. From her pointers, the design for The Mia Scarf was born.
The original design was a little different from this rendition, though. Her scarf was an infinity scarf, where I started with a provisional cast on, then attached the ends together with the kitchener stitch. There are tons of great youtube videos out there to show you this method of making a scarf. However, for today’s pattern, I wanted a simpler look, and I just LOVE tassels on a scarf! So, a straight scarf with tassels is what we have here.
However, with this design, feel free to modify it however you like. If you want an infinity scarf, try out the provisional/kitchener method, it makes some seamlessly beautiful scarves! If you don’t like tassels, leave them off. This is your scarf, customize it however you like!
This scarf looks lovely however you wear it, too. With the reversible rib cable, both the right and wrong sides of the scarf have their own unique and stunning style. The cables and raspberry stitch really give this scarf a lovely structured look that will have everyone asking, where did you get that scarf!?
I used Lion Brand Yarns Touch of Alpaca, which is a weight 4 aran yarn, for this design because I just love how soft it is and the drape of finished garments. But, you can make this scarf with just about any type of yarn from DK to bulky. Some good substitutes for this Touch of Alpaca are Knit Picks Mighty Stitch (80% acrylic, 20% wool) or Brava Worsted (100% acrylic), Novita Puro Batik (100% acrylic), Caron Jumbo, or Lion Brand Yarns Pound of Love (100% acrylic). Pound of love is a little less dense, but it has the same gauge. That gives you some options both in $$$ and availability!
This scarf is also pretty unisex as well, it just depends on the yarn and color of yarn.

What You Need:
Needles: 5mm straight or circular needles
Yarn: Weight 4 Aran yarn. Sample knit in Lion Brand Yarns Touch of Alpaca, (90% acrylic 10% alpaca). 622 yrds (I used colorway Crimson, it is about 3 skeins of the regular ToA)
Gauge: 18 st/20 rows = 4” in stockinette
Finished Garment Size: length: 64 inches width: 10 inches
Skills Needed/Abbreviations:
CO: cast on
BO: bind off
RS: right side
WS: wrong side
St: stitch/es
Rep: repeat
K: knit
P: purl
Sl st kw: slip right-hand needle into the 1st stitch on the left-hand needle like you are going to knit it. Without knitting it, simple slip it to the right-hand needle. Continue knitting as usual.
Yo: yarn over
Ssk: slip, slip, knit. slip the first stitch as if to knit onto right-hand needles, slip the second stitch as if to knit, then slide the left-hand needle into the front part of both stitches and knit them together.
K2tog: knit 2 together
PM: place marker
P3tog: purl 3 together
C12b rib: cable 12 back rib. Slip 6 st onto cable needle. With cable needle held in back of work, [p1, k1] x3 rib, then [p1, k1] x3 rib from cable needle.
C12f rib: cable 12 forward rib. Slip 6 st onto cable needle. With cable needle held in front of work, [p1, k1] x3 rib, then [p1, k1] x3 rib from cable needle.
