Before you Start Knitting your Booties

Materials

  • 5 mm / US 8 knitting needles. You can see on the pictures I used my circular needles out of habit but you don’t need circular needles. You can make these baby booties with straight needles. (Confused about all these types of needles? This post is for you)
  • Worsted weight wool yarn: 20g white and 20g pink yarn.
  • Tapestry needle to weave in the ends. I love this set as it has different eye sizes for different yarn thicknesses and it comes in a small tube which is very convenient so I don’t lose them.

The Yarn

I loved working with this affordable 100% Alpaca wool yarn. It really slides effortlessly on your needless. The pink color has some hues of bleu which really give it a more sophisticated note. The offwhite is just how I like it, not real white but doesn’t lean on the yellow creamish either.

Unfortunately, this yarn seems unavailable on Amazon currently so I have listed a few suggestions for substitutes here:

Size

The pattern is available in sizes 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 24 months written as follows throughout the pattern: 12 months (3, 6, 18, 24).

The step by step pictures show the 12 months size.

Switch to pink color yarn. Leave a long white tail for sewing.

Knit 2 rows in garter stitch.

Forming the Toes

From now on you will start shaping the toecap. This is done with the middle 8 (6, 6, 8, 8) stitches.

On the next row, knit 16 (12, 12, 16, 16). Leave the remaining 8 (6, 6, 8, 8) st on the needle and turn as if you finished the row.

On the next row, slip the first st and knit 7 (5, 5, 7, 7) st. Continue knitting these middle st in garter st and slipping the first st for 14 (12, 12, 14, 16) more rows.

With your left needle, pick up 8 (7, 7, 8, 9) st along the side of the middle section. Because you slipped the first st of each row, you can see a little loop for each stitch you need to pick up.

Pick up stitches on the side of the baby booties

Keep knitting these new stitches and the 8 (6, 6, 8, 8) st we put on hold.

On the next row, knit until the end of the toecap section, with your right needle pick up 8 (7, 7, 8, 9) more st along the edge (for the other side of the toecap). Keep knitting until the end of the row.

Baby booties toecap formed

Knit all 40 (32, 32, 40, 42) st in garter stitch for 5 rows. This will give its height to the sock.
