Free Child Cape Knitting Pattern

Dress your kids up in style this winter with this fashionable retro-looking cape. It's designed to match the Kid's Vintage Cable Beret.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off;
-Increasing: make 1 (m1), knit into front and back (kfr&b;
-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog);
-Picking up stitches;
-Working I-cord.

Sizes: 2 (4, 6, 8, 10)
Shown in size 4.

Measurements
For chest: 21 (23, 25, 26.5, 28) inches [53 (58, 64, 67, 71) cm]
Length of cape: 17 (20.5, 22, 23, 25) inches [43 (52, 56, 58, 64) cm]

Materials:
Paton (affiliate link)s North America Classic Wool Tweeds worsted weight yarn (90% Wool, 7% Acrylic, 3% Rayon), 210 yards(192 meters)/100 gr, color 84008 Aran – 3 (4, 4, 5, 5) balls

Notions: 4 buttons, 6 stitch markers, tapestry needle, sewing needle and thread of matching color.

Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) circular 32” (80 cm) needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge for stockinette st: 17 sts x 26 rows = 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm)

Abbreviations:
st, sts - stitch, stitches
k - knit
p - purl
k2tog - knit 2 together
kfr&b - knit into front and back loops
pu&k- pick up and knit
m1 - make 1 increase - make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit as a regular stitch.
pm - place marker
sm - slip marker
rm - remove marker
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
Bb – button band

Pattern Notes:

Garter St in rows: All rows – knit

Stockinette Stitch in rows:
Row 1 (RS, and all RS rows): knit
Row 2 (WS and all WS rows): purl
Repeat 2 rows

The selvedge/edge stitches here are worked as follows: slip the first st and purl the last one.

Raglan increases: Increase for raglan by making 1 st (m1) on each side of indicated, marked, stitch in every right side (RS) row, as follows: knit to the marker, m1, sm, k1 (raglan st), m1. There are 4 raglan lines, so the number of sts increases by 8 in each RS row.

The button bands (bb) are worked in garter st on 4 stitches at the beginning and at the end of each row.

Short overview of the pattern:

The cape is worked from the top down, back and forth, as one piece without seams in stockinette and garter stitches. The slits for hands are worked simultaneously, from 3 balls of yarn. The cape features a frog closure shaped with I-cord.

Cape

Using provisional cast on method cast on 30 (31, 31, 32, 33) sts and purl one foundation row (wrong side). Check the sts and place markers on raglan lines as follows:
1 st (selvedge) + 1 st (front) + 1 st (first raglan, place a marker before this stitch) + 4 sts (sleeve) + 1 st (second raglan, place a marker before this stitch) + 14 (15, 15, 16, 17) sts (back) + 1 st (third raglan, place a marker before this stitch) + 4 sts (sleeve) + 1 st (forth raglan, place a marker before the stitch) + 1 st (front) + 1 st (selvedge).

Row 1 (RS, increase row): sl 1, m1, k1, *m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, knit all sts till the next marker, repeat from * 3 times, m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, k1, m1, p1. Total 40 (41, 41, 42, 43) sts.

Row 2 (WS) and all WS rows: sl 1, purl all sts.

Repeat rows 1-2 two more times. At the end of row 6 cast on 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) sts. Total after row 6: 67 (68, 68, 70, 71) sts.

Row 7 (increase row): sl 1, k4 (button band), pm, knit till the next marker, *m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, knit all sts till the next marker, repeat from * two more times, m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, knit to the last 5 sts, pm, k 5. Cast on 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) sts at the end of the row. Total after row 7: 82 (83, 83, 86, 87) sts.

Row 8 (WS): sl1, k4, sm, purl till the last marker, sm, k 4, p1.

Row 9 (increase row): sl 1, k4 (button band), sm, knit till the next marker, * m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, knit all sts till the next marker, repeat from * three more times, sm, k4, p1. Total 90 (91, 91, 94, 95) sts.

Row 10 (WS) and all WS rows: sl1, k4, sm, purl till the last marker, sm, k 4, p1.

Repeat rows 9-10 11 (13, 15, 16, 17) more times. Total after last increase row 178 (195, 211, 222, 231) sts. Total rows: 32 (38, 40, 44, 46).

Row 33 (39, 41, 45, 47) (increase row): sl1, k4 (button band), sm, knit till next marker, *sm, m1, knit till the next marker, repeat from * three more times, sm, k4, p1. (+ 4 sts)

Row 34 (40, 42, 46, 48) (WS) - like row 10

Repeat rows 33-34 (39-40; 41-42; 45-46; 47-48) three more times. Total after last increase row 194 (211, 227, 238, 247).

After last row (40, 46, 48, 52, 54) remove 4 markers from raglan lines, leaving only the markers at button bands.


Armholes

Row 41 (47, 49, 53, 55): sl1, k4, sm, k11, kb&f, drop working yarn, attach yarn from another, second, ball, knit till 12 sts remain before the second marker, drop the yarn, attach yarn from another, third, ball, kb&f, k 11 (till marker), sm, k4, p1.

Row 42 (48, 50, 54, 56): from the first ball of yarn: sl1, k4, sm, p9, pm, k3, p1; from the next ball of yarn: sl1, k3, pm, purl to the last 4 sts of this part, pm, k3, p1; from the last ball of yarn: sl1, k3, pm, purl to the last marker, sm, k4, p1.

Row 43 (49, 51, 55, 57): from the first ball of yarn: sl1, k4, sm, knit to next marker, sm, k3, p1; from the next ball of yarn: sl1, k3, sm, knit to next marker, sm, k3, p1; from the last ball of yarn: sl1, k3, sm, knit to next marker, sm, k4, p1.

Row 44 (50, 52, 56, 58): from the first ball of yarn: sl1, k4, sm, purl to next marker, sm, k3, p1; from the next ball of yarn; sl1, k3, sm, purl to next marker, sm, k3, p1; from the last ball of yarn: sl1, k3, sm, purl to last marker, sm, k4, p1.

Repeat rows 43-44 (49-50, 51-52, 55-56, 57-58) 14 (fourteen) more times.

Next row: work from the 1st ball of yarn; sl1, k4, sm, knit till next marker, rm, k3, k2tog, k3, rm, knit till next marker, rm, k3, k2tog, k3, rm, knit to last marker, sm, k4, p1.

Next WS row and all WS rows. sl1, k4, sm, purl to the last marker, sm, k4, p1.

Next RS row and all RS rows: sl1, k4, sm, knit till the last marker, sm, k4, p1.

Next WS row work as est.

Repeat the last 2 rows 14 (22, 26, 28, 32) times or to desired length

Work 8 rows of garter stitch: all rows knit. Bind off.


Neckline

Remove the waste yarn from the neckline cast on and pick up the stitches. Work 6 rows of garter stitch: all rows knit. Bind off.


Finishing

Weave in ends. Block

Knit two pieces of I-cord 8” (20 cm) (or less) long. Form an “8” and sew the ends together. Sew on 2 pairs of buttons at the neck line and 3” (8 cm) apart. Sew one loop of the frog around the buttons on one side.
