Orange You Glad Cardigan

Orange You Glad is a stockinette, boxy cropped cardigan with a round jewel neckline. Colorful beads are knit throughout on the bodice, the back and the three-quarter length sleeves. Complete with a pop of teal down the center, this is the vibrant piece your summer wardrobe has been waiting for.

Materials

Yarn: Purl Soho Mulberry Merino (80% Extra Fine Merino, 20%Mulberry Silk; 247 yards [226 meters]/100 grams): 1222 Persimmon Orange (MC, 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) skeins), 1453 Green Spruce Heather (CC, 1 skein)

Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) 32-40” circular (used as for straight knitting), US size 7 (4.5mm) 14” straight or 20-24” circular

Notions: Stitch holders (4), tapestry needle, sewing needle, seven 0.75” / [2 cm] buttons, 2 mm crochet hook 16 mm wood beads (optional) 250 (orange, brown, natural, red, ocre).

 

Pattern Notes

This round jewel neck, center front buttoned, boxy cropped cardigan, is worked in St st from the bottom up in one piece to the armhole shaping. Garter st edging is worked at the same time as garment is knit, including front-facing and buttonhole band. From Armhole shaping, the Fronts and Back are worked separately to the shoulder BO.

Beads (optional) are placed in a random method on the St st background as described in Special Stitches. Sleeves are knit separately, seamed and attached to body at armhole openings. Neckline garter st edging is finished with final buttonhole. Buttons are sewn on.

Special Stitches

Sleeve Decreases (RS): K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

Bead Placement (RS): K the st that will be used for placing the bead. Place bead on 2 mm crochet hook. Slide worked st from RH needle onto hook, slip bead onto this st. Place st back on RH needle.

 

Pattern

With longer circular needles, CC, working flat, CO 172 (180, 190, 200, 208, 216) sts.

Knit 4 rows, ending with WS row.

Row 1 (RS): K4 with CC, k with MC to last 4 sts, k4 with CC.

Row 2: K4 with CC, p with MC to last 4 sts, k4 with CC.

Row 3 (buttonhole row): K2, yo, k2tog with CC, k with MC to last 4 sts, k4 with CC.

Row 4: K4 with CC, p with MC to last 4 sts, with CC k1, k the yo, k2.

Cont working Rows 1-2 as established, AT THE SAME TIME, place beads and buttonholes as follows:

Bead Placement: Beg on 6th row of St st body of sweater, place up to 6 beads on every RS 6th row.

Buttonholes: Work RS as per Row 3 and WS as per Row 4, every 2 (2.5, 3, 3, 3, 3.25)” / [5 (6.5, 7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 8.5) cm].

Work Body (Fronts and Back) to 8.5 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10)” / [21.5 (21.5, 23, 24, 25.5, 25.5) cm], ending with WS row.

Armhole and Neckline Shaping

Keeping to established pattern, work 36 (37, 38, 41, 43, 44) sts (Right Front), attach a new skein of MC, BO 14 (16, 18, 18, 18, 20) sts, work 72 (74, 78, 82, 86, 88) sts (Back), attach a new skein of MC, BO 14 (16, 18, 18, 18, 20) sts, work 36 (37, 38, 41, 43, 44) sts (Left Front).

Place Right and Left Front sts onto st holders.

Back

Work even in St st to 8.5 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10)” / [21.5 (21.5, 23, 24, 25.5, 25.5) cm].

BO 24 (24, 25, 25, 27, 29) sts, work 24 (26, 28, 28, 32, 30) sts (Back Neck), BO 24 (24, 25, 25, 27, 29) sts.

Place back neck sts on a stitch holder.

Right Front

(WS): Work as established with MC and CC in St st and Garter st.

(RS): Cont in pattern including bead placement and buttonholes work for 6 (6, 5.5, 5, 4.75, 5)” / [15 (15, 14, 12.5, 12, 12.5) cm].

Next Row (WS): K4 in CC, place these 4 sts on st holder, p to end.

Next Row (RS): Begin Neckline Dec, BO 4 (3, 4, 6, 6, 5) sts, work to end. (32 (34, 34, 35, 37, 39) sts)

Next and each WS row, work as established.

BO 2 sts at beg of RS row (at neck edge) 3 (3, 3, 3, 3, 3) times, work to end. (26 (28, 28, 29, 31, 33) sts)

Dec 1 st at Neck Edge every RS row 2 (4, 3, 4, 4, 4) times. (24 (24, 25, 25, 27, 29) sts)

Cont work to Back shoulder measurement.

BO sts.

Left Front

Work as established with MC and CC in St st and Garter st.

Cont in patt, including bead placement and buttonholes work for 6 (6, 5.5, 5, 4.75, 5)” / [15 (15, 14, 12.5, 12, 12.5) cm].

(WS): K4 in CC and place these st on st holder, p to end.

(RS): Work this and each RS Row as established.

(WS): At neck edge, BO 4 (3, 4, 6, 6, 5) sts, work to end. (32 (34, 34, 35, 37, 39) sts)

(WS): At neck edge, BO 2 sts 3 (3, 3, 3, 3, 3) times, work to end. (26 (28, 28, 29, 31, 33) sts)

Dec 1 st at Neck Edge every WS row 2 (4, 3, 4, 4, 4) times. (24 (24, 25, 25, 27, 29) sts)

Cont working to Back shoulder measurement.

BO sts.

Sleeves

With MC, CO 100 (104, 110, 114, 120, 124) sts.

Work in St st for 2”. Begin first row of Beading on 8th row and every 6th row thereafter.

Decreases

(RS): Decrease 1 st each end of needle every 6th row 7 (6, 1, 3, 0, 0) times. (86 (92, 108, 108, 120, 124) sts)

Next, decrease 1 st each end of needle every 4th row 18 (21, 26, 26, 30, 32) times. (50 (50, 56, 56, 60, 60) sts)

Work as established to 17.75 (18, 18.5, 18.5, 18.5, 18.5)” / [45 (45.5, 47, 47, 47, 47) cm].

With CC, work 4 rows in Garter St.

BO sts.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block.

Sew Shoulder Seams.

Neckline

With RS facing, starting at Right Front, PU and k4 sts (CC ) from st holder, PU and k17 (19, 21, 22, 23, 25) sts, k sts from Back Neck st holder, PU and k17 (19, 21, 22, 23, 25) sts, k4 sts (CC) from st holder.

Next Row: K.

Next Row (RS): Work buttonhole as follows: K2, yo, k2tog, finish row in Garter st.

Next Row: Work in Garter st to last 4 sts, k1, k the yo, k2.

BO all sts.

Sew Sleeve seams.

Sew Sleeves into Armholes, matching center top of sleeve with Shoulder Seam.

Sew in ends. Sew on Buttons. Weave in any rem ends. Steam press.

      Thank you Denise! I have a couple of ideas in other colours too! White with navy trim is one idea, and for a more conservative Fall look , I was thinking soft grey with black trim! Love to see your ideas!
