EASY Free Pattern – Cozy Chunky Knit Hand Warmers

The cooler weather is upon us and it is time to dress for the elements. Although our hands can get chilly outside, it is not quite time to bring out the wool winter mittens. Hand warmers to the rescue! Now is a good time to make a pair of chunky knit hand warmers (also known as fingerless mittens or wrist warmers) to keep the chill away.

Today I have a free pattern for chunky knit hand warmers that will not take up much of your time or yarn. I made them with a pretty green yarn, perfect for fall and Christmas time. Next time you head out for a walk or perhaps to pick apples, grab a pair of these knitted hand warmers! They will keep your wrists and hands warmer and look adorable.

Supplies

  • Size 13 (9 mm) and size 15 (10 mm) knitting needles (straight or circular)
  • approx. 40 yards of Super Bulky (size 6) yarn to make 2 hand warmers. I used half a skein of LION BRAND HOMETOWN USA acrylic yarn in the Oklahoma City Green color, which comes in 81 yds.
  • scissors, yarn needle

How to Knit Chunky Wrist Warmers

You will be knitting the warmers as a rectangle to start, then joining the long sides at the end. The first 8 rows of the warmers form the foundation, which will provide a tighter fit around the wrist. The last 16 rows of the warmers are knit using the looser size 15 needles.

Abbreviations

K – knit stitch

K2tog – knit 2 together

P – purl stitch

yo – yarn over

skpo – slip stitch, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over

RS – Right Side (side that faces you when finished)
