Happy Thanksgiving all my American friends! I know this year is going to be A LOT different for many of you. Socially distanced holidays are stinky! But, I hope that you’re still going to have a good time with your immediate family! I know Vin and I are going to be making all the normal things, then gorging ourselves for days!! So many left overs!! I am so READY! (my British boy just doesn’t understand the gorging you’re supposed to do on Thanksgiving, but don’t worry, I’ll teach him one day!).

Stay safe everyone!

ABOUT THIS HAT:

This is the Lizzy Hat!! This hat is dedicated to my great friend Lizzy. She’s been here for me when I’ve had questions, and helped me figure out what I wanted to do with this hat when I was in early planning stages. She’s awesome! So, this hat’s for you, Lizzy!

The hat is created using the hurdle stitch and the double seed stitch, which creates a simple but lovely textured effect. It is a quick knit that’s great to work up in front of the TV or when you need something to keep your hands busy when you’re concentrating on something else.

The directions are written for 3 sizes; child, adult small, and adult large. This encompasses head circumferences from 19" - 24". But, this hat is easily adjustable for all head sizes. If you want a slouchier hat, keep knitting in pattern until it’s the length you like, want something a little closer fitting, go ahead and take out a couple repeats. It also has a lot of stretch in the brim, so if you have thick hair, you don’t have to worry about the hat being too tight!

The hat uses between 150 - 200 yards of weight 4 worsted yarn. I used Lion Brand Wool Ease to make my hat, but you can use a variety of different weight 4 yarns. Though, Wool Ease is a lighter weight worsted yarn, so keep that in mind. If you do end up choosing a heavier weight 4, then just be mindful of your gauge in order to get the size you really want. Though, with hats, you have a lot of leeway in sizing. The child and teen/adult small sizes use less than 1 skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease, the adult large will need about 1.5 skeins.

Also, there are 2 different ways to wear the Lizzy Hat! You can wear it as a folded brim beanie, or as a slouchy hat! So there's something for everyone!

THANK YOU! to all my wonderful testers!

  1. Pattern written with smallest size first and next sizes in parentheses.Child(Small Adult, Large Adult)

  2. I used a short set of circular needles, but you can also use DPNs if you feel they would work better.

  3. This hat is knit straight with no decreases, and then seamed together when it is to your desired length to make the hat. With this method, it is easy to modify the length of the hat.

  4. For the width, you need to modify the hat in multiples of 12 to keep the pattern.

Assembly:

1. Using the long tail, with a tapestry needle, weave the yarn through every other stitch along the BO edge then pull tight to cinch in the top of the hat.

2. Optional: Sew a button to the WS to hold the pom pom, then attach the pom pom to the RS by pushing the fastener through and attaching to the button. This makes the pom pom removable so that it can be washed. For more information, check out the bottom of this page.

Ways to Wear:

You can either wear the brim folded over for a more form fitting beanie, or you can wear it with the brim unfolded for a slouchy look!
