Winter League Pullover

When I began developing Hue + Me with Lion Brand Yarn a year ago, one of the designs at the top of my list was a bulky weight version of the Autumn League Pullover - a personal and fan fave. If you asked me to name my top three designs of all time, it is definitely in the mix (would prob go with the Armor Scarf and Mariner's Cap as the other two). It's also consistently one of my best sellers. The wearability along with the fun details like deep raglan sleeves and the little triangle neck detail make it an instant classic that seems to go with everything in my closet, and I couldn't wait to translate that into a colder weather, quicker project with Hue + Me, so the Winter League Pullover was born! Scroll down for the free pattern, click here for the ad-free PDF, and click here to grab the yarn kit from Lion Brand.

The concept of the Autumn League Pullover, and thus the Winter League Pullover, came from classic vintage sports sweatshirts. Invented by football player Benjamin Russell Jr in the 1920s, the classic crewneck sweatshirt has remained an icon in American wardrobes. How funny that it was designed as an alternative to the typical itchy wool sweaters worn by athletes at the time, and now I'm circling it all back to a handknit version, haha.

Aside from the deep raglans, folded over ribbed collar, slouchy silhouette, and bottom side slits, what really makes the Autumn and Winter League Pullovers special is the little v detail at the neck. In a traditional sweatshirt, this is actually an added piece of fabric that captured sweat and increased durability to help prevent the collar from getting stretched out. Including this signature detail is definitely what helps these sweaters evoke the essence of the original.

I love the everyday wardrobe staple vibes of this design. The simply sophisticated details lend themselves to a very comfortable and chic piece that looks professional and not too flashy. It's one of the most worn knits in my closet and honestly I could have one in every color of the rainbow and not get sick of it! I love how nostalgic and youthful it feels and it just instantly puts me in a good mood.

This is an intermediate level knitting pattern and the techniques involved are the knit stitch, purl stitch, k2tog, ssk, m1r, m1l, traveling stitches, working in the round, picking up and knitting stitches, and working a tubular bind off.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Left Twist (LT): Worked at traveling stitch; slip two stitches, one at a time, knitwise to right needle, slip these stitches purlwise back to the left needle, knit through the back loop of the second stitch but do not remove from the left needle, then knit the two stitches together through the back loop and remove them from the left needle.

Right Twist (RT): Worked one stitch before traveling stitch; knit two stitches together but do not remove from the left needle, then knit into just the first stitch and remove both stitches from the left needle.

Notes: Sweater is worked top down. Yoke is first worked flat to allow for front neck shaping, then work is joined in the round for the remainder of the pattern. After yoke shaping, work is separated into body and sleeves. A faux seam is worked along the sides of the body and underside of sleeves to add structure. Neckband is picked up and knit from cast on edge. Pattern is written for eight sizes XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL).
