Waterfall Lace Baby Blanket

Free Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern

The Waterfall Lace pattern has been popular on the internet lately, and this is a simple adaptation of it for a baby blanket. It's an easy and cute pattern, which inexperienced knitters can handle.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off
-Increasing :yarn over (YO),
-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog), purl 2 together (p2tog)
-Working lace patterns

Finished measurements: 36" x 36".

Materials: Red Heart (affiliate link) Super Saver Ombre aran weight yarn, 10 oz(283 gr)/482yds (440 m), 100% acrylic, color Sea Coral – 1.5 skein

Needles: circular needles US #8 (5 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 16 sts x 22 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch.

Notions: yarn needle.

Abbreviations:
st, sts - stitch, stitches
k - knit
p - purl
k2tog - knit 2 together
p2tog - purl 2 together
yo - yarn over
RS - right side
WS - wrong side


Pattern Notes:

Garter stitch in rows: all rows knit.

Waterfall lace pattern: multiple of 6 plus 3
Row 1 (WS) - k3, *p3, k3 -repeat from *
Row 2 (RS) - p3, *k3, yo, p3 - repeat from *
Row 3 : k3, * p4, k3 - repeat from *
Row 4: p3, *k1, k2tog, yo, k1, p3 - repeat from *
Row 5: k3, *p2, p2tog, k3 - repeat from *
Row 6 - p3, *k1, yo, k2tog, p2 - repeat from *
Repeat rows 1-6

Selvedge stitches: the first and the last sts in each row are selvedge stitches, work them as follows: slip the first stitch and purl the last stitch in all rows except the very first one, in the first row knit the first st and purl the last one.


Short Overview of the Pattern:

The blanket is worked in the Waterfall lace pattern. The borders of the blanket are worked in garter stitch together with the main part of the blanket.

To make a larger blanket, you can either increase the number of stitches for the borders and make them wider, or the number of lace repeats on the main part of the blanket.


Blanket

Cast on 139 stitches. These include: 129 sts for 21 repeat of the lace pattern, 8 sts (4+4) borders, 2 edge sts.

Work rows 1-7 in garter stitch, all rows knit, but don't forget about the selvedge sts.

Row 8 (WS): sl 1, k4, *k3, p3 - repeat from * 21 times, k3, k4, p1

Row 9 (RS): sl1, k4, *p3, k3, yo - repeat from * 21 times, p3, k4, p1.

Row 10: sl1, k4, *k3, p4 - repeat from * 21 times, k3, k4, p1.

Row 11: sl 1, k4, *p3, k1, k2tog, yo, k1- repeat from * 21 times, p3, k4, p1

Row 12: sl 1, k4, *k3, p2, p2tog - repeat from * 21 times, k3, k4, p1.

Row 13: sl 1, k4, *p3, k1, yo, k2tog - repeat from * 21 times, p3, k4, p1.

Repeat rows 8-13 30 times, or to desired length.

In the end, work 7 rows in garter stitch, bind off.


Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends. Block.

To clarify, the cast on needs to be 136 stitches. These include 126 sts for 21 repeat of the lace pattern, plus 10 sts for the borders.
