When I recently learned about the Soap S.A.C.K mission, I knew I had to get involved. These are so fun to make and good for the soul, as an important way to give back to our community. I have a lot of cotton sitting in my stash, so this was the perfect time to get to work.
As a knitter, I struggled a bit to find patterns ... when I found a seed stitch pattern on Ravelry, I was off to the races.
I made about a dozen with this pattern but I wanted to play around with different stitches to create some variety for other knitters out there.
Most patterns are written as 6" across and 8" tall, but since this is a horizontal pattern, I flipped it. So you will cast on enough stitches for 8" across (to fold in half) and knit 6" from the cast on.
As my pile of completed soap sacks grows ... so does the remnant pile! Time to work up some designs with colorwork. I found quite a bit in my stash that weighed 0.5 or 0.6 oz, so not enough for a full soap sack, but perfect for this pattern. Using simple stitches and a couple of contrasting colors, you'll create a fun and unique design.
MATERIALS & INFO
Yarn: 65 yards (1.1 oz) worsted weight cotton – 0.6 oz Color A /0.5 oz Color B
Gauge: 18 sts per 4”/10 cm
Needles: US 9 – 5.5 mm
Size G or 7 Crochet Hook (for loop)
Notions: Darning needle
Finished size: 4” x 6”

ABBREVIATIONS
K = knit
P = purl
Sl = all stitches are slipped purlwise
slip as if to purl, with right needle in front
of the left
wyif = with yarn in front
bring yarn through the needles to the front on the working side
wyib = with yarn in back
bring yarn through the needles to the back off the working side
PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 35 stitches
Row 1 & 2: With A, knit.
Row 3 (RS): With B, k1, *wyib sl 1, k3; rep from * to last 2 sts, wyib sl 1, k1.
Row 4: With B, k1, wyif sl 1, *p3, wyif sl1; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 5 & 6: With A, knit.
Row 7: With B, k1, *k2, wyib sl 1, k1; rep from * to last two sts, k2.
Row 8: With B, p2, *p1, wyif sl 1, p2; rep from * to last st, k1.
Repeat 1-8 until piece measures 6” from cast-on edge end with row 2.
FINISHING
Bind off. Transfer last live stitch to a crochet hook, chain 18, with crochet hook use single crochet to attach the loop to the flat knit piece.
Cut yarn tail of 30” for seaming and pull through remaining live stitch to bind off.
Fold piece in half, seam side and bottom edges.
