I love this beanie, it has a simple style and looks great on the guys and the girls. This one is very similar to my Favourite Ribbed Beanie but I have added 5 simple C4F cables in with the ribs for a nice simple cable look. A folded rim adds extra warmth around the ears.

Knit up in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky, this one knits up quickly. This is a really nice and affordable soft bulky wool with even thickness throughout which gives the beanie beautiful stitch definition. Also, I LOVE this colour. Gosling is a perfect neutral, light, flat gray with just a touch of beige which makes it more of an earthy, muted tone. Perfect for showing off those cables.
Make this classic beanie a little more fun and trendy by topping it off with a faux fur pompom.

You will need one hank, 137 yards
Needles and Tools
US 8 (5 mm) 16″ circular knitting needle
US 10 (6 mm) 16″ circular knitting needle
US 10 (6 mm) Double Point Needles
Stitch Marker
Cable Needle
Darning Needle
Gauge
4″ = 16 stitches and 20 rows on US10 (6mm) needles in K2, P2 ribbing
Size
Circumference 22″-24″ (56cm -61cm)
Length 9.5″ (24cm) folded, 11.5″ (29cm) unfolded
Abbreviations
C4F – Cable Four Forward, place the next 2 stitches on a cable needle and hold at the front of your work, knit 2 then knit 2 from the cable needle
CO – Cast On
DPNs – Double Point Needles
K2tog – Decrease one by knitting the next 2 stitches together
KFB – Knit Front and Back (option increase for this pattern), increase 1 by knitting into the front and back of the next stitch
LLI – Left Lifted Increase. This is similar to an M1, increase 1 by picking up and knitting a stitch in the leg of the stitch two rows below the stitch just knit on the right needle
P2tog – Decrease one by purling the next 2 stitches together
RLI – Right Lifted Increase. This is similar to an M1, increase 1 by picking up and knitting a stitch into the leg of the stitch directly below the next stitch on the left needle
Instructions
Ribs and Cable Beanie
CO 80 with US 8 circular needle, place marker and join round
[K2, P2] repeat to end
Work 11 more rounds of K2, P2 ribbing
Increase Round: [[K2, P2] x3, K1, LLI, RLI, K1, P2] repeat to end
Designers Note: I use LLI and RLI as an increase for a nice transition from the rib to cable. These increases are forms of M1, you are picking up the stitch from the legs of stitches. See the abbreviation section above for more details. Optional: If you’re looking for an easier method you can substitute K1, LLI, RLI, K1 with KFB x2.
Switch to US 10 circular needle
Next Round: [[K2, P2] x3, K4, P2] repeat to end
Begin Repeat Rounds
Round 1: [[K2, P2] x3, C4F, P2] repeat to end
Rounds 2-4: [[K2, P2] x3, K4, P2] repeat to end
Work these repeat rounds a total of 8 times
Begin Decrease Rounds – Switch to DPNs when needed
Next Round: [[K2, P2] x3, place the next 2 stitches on a cable needle and hold at the front of your work, K2tog then K2tog from the cable needle, P2] repeat to end
Next Round: [K2, P2] repeat to end
Next Round: [K2, P2tog] repeat to end
Next Round: [K2, P1] repeat to end
Next Round: {K2tog, P1] repeat to end
Next Round: [K1, P1] repeat to end
Next Round: [Slip the first stitch (knit stitch) without changing the direction of the stitch, slip the second stitch (purl stitch) so the direction of the stitch matches the first stitch. Return both stitches to the left hand needle, K2tog] repeat to end
Next Round: [K2tog] repeat to end
Cut the yarn and run it through the remaining stitches with a darning needle. Run it through the center into the inside of the beanie. Sew a couple stitches to secure.
Weave in loose ends
Wash and block
Looks great with or without a pompom, add one if you’d like
