FREE PATTERN - Stepping Stones Shawl - Ravin Sekai Designs 1

FALL! GLORIOUS FALL! So the weather has cooled down significantly, and I really couldn’t be happier! I feel like I can leave my house without dying and sweating through my clothes. That’s definitely a huge plus. And, we’re getting closer to spooky season. WIN!

Nothing really new has been happening here in Casa de la Hill. If you’re part of my Patreon, you have already heard most of the latest news, too. So, because we’re super boring here, let’s get to what you wanna know about!

ABOUT THIS SHAWL:

This is the Stepping Stones Shawl. It is a gorgeous lace shawl that transitions from one lace to another seamlessly. The flowing design is like stepping stones through a river. It is made by starting at different colors alternating 2 different cakes of the same colorway of variegated yarn every 2 rows. This is what causes the fun two colored striping effect.

The shawl is purposefully large for a cozy oversized feeling, which is perfect for snuggling into when it’s cool outside. But, you can adapt the size to your liking by either adding or subtracting repeats of the lace patterns.

The sample shawl is knit in Lion Brand Mandala yarn, colorway Warlock. This yarn is a weight 3 DK yarn. However, because the gauge is not particularly important, you can easily knit this shawl in either weight 2 or 4 yarn as well. Of course, a worsted weight yarn will yield a much larger shawl if you don’t make any adjustments to the pattern as stated. Same with a sport weight, only opposite, making a smaller shawl.

But, with whatever yarn you decide to make this shawl with, you’re sure to have a stunning accessory piece for this fall!

THANK YOU! to all my wonderful testers!

Kat and Laura

Notes:

  1. Gauge is not super important for this shawl. Just be aware of your gauge vs. the stated gauge to have an idea of the size of shawl you will create. Also, be aware that many people have a looser gauge when they do lace because their yo’s are larger that a normal stockinette st. Because of this, I have provided both a stockinette gauge and a lace gauge. So, if you are a person with tighter than typical lace, you might want to check the gauge of the lace, too.

  2. If you choose a lighter weight yarn, be aware you will need more yardage to create the same size as shown and will need to knit more repeats of the lace. If you choose a heavier weight, the shawl will be larger if you knit the repeats as stated in the pattern, etc.

  3. On either side of the shawl, there is a border of sl1kw, k1….k1, sl1kw on the RS and p1, k1…..k1, p1 on the WS. It is only written on the first two rows of the Set Up Rows, but you will knit it throughout.

  4. To get the effect I have in the sample shawl, you will be using 2 skeins of yarn at the same time. You can use contrasting colors or variegated yarn that changes like I did. You will change which skein of yarn you are working from every 2 rows. For example, make your garter and Rows 1 and 2 with skein 1 (S1), then switch to skein 2 (S2) for Row 3 and 4, and then back again to S1 for rows 5 and 6. Cont. in this method, back and forth, until you reach the length you prefer.
