Jareth Socks

I wanted to create a knitting pattern for people who were new to learning socks. While learning socks I found the easiest method for the heel was heel flap and gusset which is the method I have used for this pattern. These are knit on double pointed needles but you are only using 4 so it is a little easier to manage. I named these after my husband as I made the pattern while keeping him in mind on how he likes a sock to fit him. He prefers a sock to come up on his ankle just enough that they are not ankle socks but not too high either. I hope you enjoy knitting these cozy socks! I would love to see your creations so if you feel inclined please share a picture of your socks over on Ravelry.

Happy knitting

Medium 4 yarn.  I used Lion Brand Mandala Ombre

3.75 mm double pointed needles

Abbreviations:

Ssk - slip slip knit

K2T - Knit two together

P2Tog - Purl two together

Wyif - with yarn in front

Wyib - with yarn in back

Sl - slip one

Leg of sock

• Cast on 40 stitches onto 3 double point needles. You will want to break it into 20-10-10.

• Knit P1 K1 ribbing for 1.5 inches.

• Knit stockinette for 2 inches.

Heel flap

• Working on only the needle with 20 stitches you will work 15 rows of stockinette stitch. Knit on right side Purl on wrong side.

• Now we will turn the heel. We will be working short rows so not every stitch will be worked before you turn your work. Trust the process.

- Row 1 (RS): k12, ssk, k1

- Row 2 (WS): sl 1 (wyif), p5, p2tog, p1

- Row 3: sl 1 (wyib), k6, ssk, k1

- Row 4: sl 1 (wyif), p7, p2tog, p1

- Row 5: sl 1 (wyib), k8, ssk, k1

- Row 6: sl 1 (wyif), p9, p2tog, p1

- Row 7: sl 1 (wyib), k10, ssk

- Row 8: sl 1 (wyif), p10, p2tog

- Row 9: knit across (12 sts remain on this needle)

Gusset

•Pick up 15 stitches along side of heel flap, place a stitch marker after the 14th pick up stitch. Knit all stitches on next needle. Knit all stitches on third needle, then pick up 15 stitches along opposite side of heel flap, placing a stitch marker after the 1st pick up stitch. (70 st)

• Decrease round.

K  to 2 sts before marker, k2tog. Sm, k to next marker, sm, ssk. Knit to end of round.

Repeat this until you have 40 st on your needles. Remove markers.

• Work stockinette stitch until the work when tried on comes to the bottom of your big toe.

Toe (this will create a rounded toe)

• Set up rounds.

Knit all the way around doing 2 k2tog evenly across the bottom of the foot.

Repeat for one more round (36 st remain).

Knit one round placing  stitch markers every 6 stitches.  5 markers

-  Knit until 2 stitches before the 1st stitch marker, SSK

-  Knit until 2 stitches before the 2nd stitch marker, K2T

-  Knit until 2 stitches before the 3rd stitch marker, K2T

Repeat the above three steps on the second half of the stitches (6 stitches total

decreased)

- Knit 2 Rounds

• Work decreases until there are only 3 stitches between markers.

• Work decrease round two times. There should be 1 stitch between each marker.

          Bind off

Cut yarn leaving a 12" tail. Using a tapestry needle thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in your ends

Repeat for second sock.
