Summer Sunshine Outfit for 18-inch Doll

Free Doll Outfit Knitting Pattern

Welcome to the Summer Sunshine Outfit knitting pattern, designed to add some stylish fun to your 18-inch doll's wardrobe. This pattern provides instructions for knitting a charming skirt and a top or cardigan, perfect for those doll-sized summer adventures.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
- Knit & purl, cast on & bind off
- Increasing: yarn over (YO), make 1 (m1)
- Working in the round on double pointed needles or on circular needles using the “magic loop” method

Size: fits 18-inch dolls like American Girl, Our Generation and other dolls with similar body.

Materials: Grace by Paton (affiliate link) sport weight yarn (100% cotton), 136 yards(124 meters) /50g – 1 ball.

Needles: circular 6” and double pointed needles (dpn) US #2 (2.75mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 27 sts x 36 rows = 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm) In stockinette st.

Notions:
yarn needle, stitch markers, 10" long piece of 1/4" wide elastic for the skirt , sew-on snaps for the top and small buttons for the cardi, sewing needle and thread of matching color, small embellishments of your choice (optional).

Abbreviations:
k - knit
p - purl
k2tog - knit 2 stitches together
pu&k- pick up and knit
yo - yarn over
m1 - make 1 increase - make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit as a regular stitch.
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
sm - slip marker
pm - place marker
rm - remove marker


Pattern Notes:

Stockinette in rows:
Row 1 (RS): knit
Row 2: purl
Repeat 2 rows.

Stockinette in rounds: All rounds knit

Seed stitch in rows:
Row 1 (RS): *k1, p1 - repeat from * to the ends of the row
Row 2 (WS): *p1, k1 - repeat from * to the ends of the row

Seed Stitch in rounds:
Round 1: *k1, p1 - repeat around
Round 2: * purl the knit stitches, knit the purl stitches - repeat around

Garter Stitch in rows: all rows knit

Raglan increases: in every right side (RS) row, work till the marker, yo, slip marker, k1, yo. There are 4 raglan lines, repeat on each raglan line, thus the number of sts in each RS row will increase by 8.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: slip the first stitch and purl the last one.

Button Bands (bb) are worked in garter stitch on 3 stitches in the beginning and in the end of each row.

Button Holes are made on button bands in the ends of the RS row in the following way: k 1, yo, k2tog.


Skirt

Short Overview of the Skirt Pattern:

The skirt is worked top-down, seamlessly, first back and forth to make a belt tube for the elastic, then - in rounds. The skirt is worked in stockinette, increases are made at 5 points to give the skirt A-shape, the lower part of the skirt is worked in seed stitch.

Cast-on 55 stitches; leave a tail of about 5-6" long.

Row 1 (RS): sl 1, knit to the last st, p1

Row 2 (WS): sl 1, purl

Repeat rows 1-2 one more time

Row 5 (RS): sl1, purl

Row 6 (WS): sl 1, purl

Rows 7 and 9 (RS): sl1, knit to last st, p1

Row 8: sl1, purl.

Row 10: Fold the belt by the ridge of the 5th row, With the tip of the left needle pick up the first stitch of the cast-on row, knit the first stitch on the left needle and the picked-up stitch together. In the same way pick-up the second stitch of the cast-on row and knit it together with the second stitch on the left needle. Continue until you knit all 55 stitches and get a tube - a casing for the elastic.



Join into round and continue in rounds.

Round 1: (k10, m1, pm, k1, m1) repeat 5 times around = 65 sts

Round 2: knit around

Rounds 3 - 23: Continue to work in stockinette (knit around) and making increases in rounds 3, 7, 13, 19 as follows: (knit till marker, m1, sm, k1, m1) x 5 times, each time the number of stitches will increase by 10 and after round 19 it should be 95.

Starting with round 24: work in seed stitch: *k1, p1 till a marker, sm, k1- repeat from * 5 times, in the next round purl the knit sts and knit the purl sts, always knit the stitches after the marker.

Work in seed stitch 20 rounds, or to desired length.

Bind off, cut yarn. .


Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends. Insert elastic in the casing, sew the ends, Then sew the casing opening with the tail of the yarn.


Top or Cropped Cardi

Both items are worked in the same way top-down and seamless. The top has button bands on the back and the sew-on snaps are used, white the cardi has the button bands on the front with the button holes and buttons.

The items are worked in stockinette with button bands in garter stitch and raglan increases. The increases are also made on the sides of the bodice to give the items A-shape.
The neckline, edges of sleeves and hem are worked in seed stitch.

Cast on 60: 1 edge - 3 bb - 5 front/back - 1 raglan (place the first marker before this st) - 12 sleeve - 1 raglan (place the second marker before this st) - 14 front or back, depending on what you are making) - 1 raglan (place the third marker before this st) - 12 sleeve - 1 raglan (place the forth marker before this st) - 5 front/ back - 3 bb - 1 edge

Work 2 foundation rows in seed stitch: sl 1, *k1, p1 - repeat to the last st, p1.

Row 1 (RS, increase row): sl 1, *knit till marker, yo, sm, k1, yo - repeat from * 4 times, knit till last st, p1. + 8 sts

For the cardi work Row 1 as follows: sl 1, *knit till marker, yo, sm, k1, yo - repeat from * 4 times, knit till last 4 sts, k1, yo, k2tog, p1. + 8 sts

Row 2 (WS): sl1, k3, purl till last 4 sts, k3, p1.

Repeat rows 1-2 four more times.

The number of sts after
row 1 = 68
row 3 = 76
row 5 = 84
row 7 = 92
row 9 = 100

Row 11: sl1, work till marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, work in seed stitch (k1, p1) till the next marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, knit till the next marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, work in seed stitch (k1, p1) till the next marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, knit till last st, p1. = 108 sts

For the cardi work row 11 as follows: sl1, work till marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, work in seed stitch (k1, p1) till the next marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, knit till the next marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, work in seed stitch (k1, p1) till the next marker, yo, sm, k1, yo, knit till last 4 sts, k1, yo, k2tog, p1. = 108 sts

Row 12: sl 1, k3, purl till the sleeve section with seed stitch, work this section in seed stitch, purl till the next sleeve, work it again in seed stitch, purl till the last 4 sts, k3, p1.

Repeat rows 11-12 one more time. After row 14 there are 116 sts.


Divide for sleeves and bodice:

Row 15 (RS): sl1, k16, bind off 26, k30, bind off 26, k16, p1 = 64 sts

Row 16: sl1, k3, p13, co5, p30, co5, p13, k3, p1 = 74 sts

Row 17: sl1, k18, pm, k35, pm, k19, p1

Row 18 and all WS rows: sl1, k3, purl till last 4, k3, p1

Rows 19 and 23 (increase rows): sl1, (knit till marker, m1, sm, k1, m1) twice, knit till last st, p1. = 68 sts (=72 sts)

Row 21 and all RS rows : sl 1, till the last st, p1.

For the cardi make the button hole over the last 4 sts: k1, yo, k2tog, p1.

Rows 27 - 32 (both RS and RS): sl 1, k3, * seed stitch pattern k1, p1 - repeat from * till last 4 sts, k3, p1.

Bind off, Cut yarn.


Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends. Sew 3-4 snaps on the button bands of the top to be closed on the back or sew 3 buttons on the left button band to be closed on the front.
