The Runaround Knit Cowl-FREE PATTERN
For some reason the first few months of the year seem like the perfect time to knit to me, I don't know why I always feel this way but I do. A couple weeks ago I finished up my new favorite cowl, I'm even wearing it as I type this post! I called it the Runaround Cowl because it has been absolutely perfect to runaround town in while I head to work, run errands, drive the kids to play dates, as well as do all the other random stuff I seem to do every single day. :-)
This cowl is extra awesome because you can wear it TWO ways! You can wrap it around twice to keep your neck warm and cozy or just throw it on as is to spice up any 'ol t-shirt you have on hand. From drab to fab I tell you.
You knit this cowl on two straight sticks and then sew the ends together with a twist to give the cowl a more decorative look. See that twist at the bottom there in the picture above...love it!
The Runaround Knit Cowl
1 skein of Lion Brand Homespun yarn
US Size 15 (10 mm) straight knitting needles
scissors and yarn needle
Gauge does not matter although my finished cowl measures 10 inches wide by 50 inches in length.
Cast on 25 stitches
Row 1: *K1 P1; Repeat from * across. K1
Continue with this pattern until cowl measures 50 inches or your desired length.
Bind off loosely in pattern.
Weave in tails.
Sew short ends together with a yarn needle making sure that you have made one twist in the cowl before sewing ends.
I'm totally loving my new cowl. And the best part is that you can knit it up in only a few hours time. Since the knit pattern is fairly basic you can even get it done while watching a little Downton Abbey (my new favorite show!)
Oooh, and how about a little belly shot! 18 weeks and counting.

Might I say how great you look, so that reason alone, means you are having a boy..girls seem to just suck the beauty from us while we are pregnant with them...also, you are carrying like a basketball=so boy 110 percent!! :)
I love the cowl and shared it with some of my friends in hopes that one of them will make it for me. I haven't learned how to knit yet! Oh and love the belly picture! I always vote for girls - dresses and girly things are so fun!

I am totally going to make this scarf! I'm using basically the same pattern for a different scarf (not a cowl) using a different yarn, but since I have 2-3 HUNDRED skeins of Homespun around, I figured I could spare one to make this. Of course I think I'll attempt a 3-needle bind off at the end cuz I hate sewing and I'm lazy like that.
I just finished my cowl tonight. Took me a couple of nights to make but this was my first knitting project in at least ten yrs. I love it . I just bought another skein to make another one. Thanks!
Hi, I am working on mine now! Working a few overnights so I am sure to finish it this week, and my daughter has already asked me to make one for her. What I did notice with my new found knitting hobby (just started for the first time last week with another cowl tutorial) is that I can't talk and knit at the same time LOL!!! I would LOVE to make this cowl if I could knit!!! My mother tried to teach me but I'm left handed and she gave up on me. You are carrying low...which means BOY :) I carried my 2 boys like that. My daughter was so high I couldn't breathe!

I made this exact same cowl in the same color homespun except I did knit it on circulars. Weird! I get compliments on it all the time--my kind of knit. Easy and attractive. :)
How do you do a 3 needle bind off? If you can post the instructions I would love to try it. I also do not like sewing up seams so if possible I knit sweaters from the "Top Down". Thanks very much and Happy New year to all!

Hi! Love this pattern but I haven't knitted in years and I'm a bit rusty - how do you weave in tails? Otherwise I'm finished and I can't wait to wear it!

I am in love with this pattern and this yarn. I have a couple of problems with it though and hope someone can help me figure what I'm doing wrong. First, I'm right handed and 'throw my stitches'. I have a really hard time with the yarn twisting as I'm knitting. I took it out of the package and wound it in a ball and maybe that is wrong. The other thing is that I have a problem maintaining tension I guess. I have noticed after being almost done that there were some spots where it had a few large holes. I undid it and redid it so that those were fixed. Also, the yarn sometimes seems to bunch up. I know this is confusing but maybe someone can help me. I'm a mess at this. I used to knit all the time and seem to remember the twisting being a problem. I have been watching youtube videos to try to learn another way to hold the needles close without 'throwing the stitches' - (I just learned that term). It would be faster and less stress on joints but I can't seem to teach this old dog a new trick lol.
Well, it is the holiday season and all so I might not get a reply very soon. Since I wrote my previous comment/question on 12/05/13, I have investigated some more and have more to say :). I really read up on what people are saying about this particular yarn and apparently the twisting is inherent to it and maybe me throwing the stitches makes it worse. However, I have been patiently knitting and tearing it out and reknitting. I have kept it from twisting but it is hard to get it to be unform enough. I can knit a few rows and then look at it and there are big holes. I am not sure if they are supposed to be there or not. Help please when possible. Anyone. :)

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with this! I don't really know how to troubleshoot this for you either, hopefully someone else can chime in if they know how to help you. I've never thrown my stitches so I am just at a loss as to how to fix that! So sorry!
Thanks Maggie for the response. Yes, I would love to stop throwing the stitches. Watching videos to try to learn another way after all these years lol. The problem though is not only that. I did look on line to see about the yarn and I see where others have the same trouble and it is mentioned that the twisting is inherent to this particular yarn but I love it so much, I'm not giving up ;)
