Wooly Jumpsuit
WOOLY JUMPSUIT
Yarn: Single strand of thicker yarn that gives 20 stitches pr. 10 cm. I prefer Drops Lima. Or use double strand of Zealand lammeuld. Knit in just one colour, or make the jumpsuit in 2 or 3 different colours of stripes.
Needles: Double pointed needles nr. 3.5 and 4, circular needle nr. 3.5 and 4
Gauge: 20 stitches pr. 10 cm
Size: 3 – 6 months (9 months – 12 months) 2 years (3 years)
Legs: Cast on 40 (42) 46 (48) stitches on dpn # 3.5. Knit ribbing for 8 (9) 10 (12) cm. On the last round increase 14 stitches evenly. Change to dpn # 4 and continue in one colour or knit stripes in 2 or 3 colours. Increase 2 stitches (1 stitch on each side of 2 middle stitches) every 2.5 cm 4 (5) 7 (8) times. Now you have 62 (66) 74 (78) stitches on your needles. Knit until the leg including the ribbing measures 26 (29) 33 (37) cm. Bind off the two middle stitches and put the first leg away while you make another one.
The body: Put both of the legs on a circular needle # 4 with the bind off stitches towards one another. You now have 120 (128) 144 (152) stitches on your needles. Now put on two markers on each side of the two front stitches and two markers on each side of the two middle stitches on the back. Join in circle continuing knitting in one colour or stripes, but every second round decrease one stitch before the first marker and one stitch after the second marker 2 (2) 3 (3) times until you have 112 (120) 132 (140) stitches on your needles. Bind off 4 stitches for opening in the front when work measures 5 cm from joining the legs. Continue knitting back and forth until work measures 27 (30) 33 (35) cm from joining the legs. Bind off 8 stitches in each side for armholes like this: Knit 21 (23) 26 (28) st, bind off 8 st, knit 50 (54) 60 (64) st, bind off 8 st, knit 21 (23) 26 (28) st. Put the work aside while knitting the arms…
Sleeves: Cast on 32 (34) 36 (40) stitches on dpn # 3.5. Knit ribbing for 4 (4) 5 (5) cm. On the last round increase 4 stitches evenly. Change to dpn # 4 and continue in one colour or knit stripes in 2 or 3 colours. Increase 2 stitches (1 stitch on each side of 2 middle stitches) every 2 cm 5 (6) 8 (8) times. Now you have 46 (50) 56 (60) stitches on your needles. When sleeve measures 20 (22) 26 (30) cm bind off the 8 middle stitches under the arm. Knit one more sleeve.
Yoke: Slip sleeves on the same circular needle as the body where bind off for armholes. Insert a marker in all transitions between body and sleeves = 4 markers. Knit stitches back and forth and at the same time on every row at the right side decrease 1 stitch on each side of all markers for raglan as this: Knit until you have 3 stitches left before you reach your first marker, ssk, knit 2, slip marker, knit 2 together. Decrease like this by every marker = 8 stitches decreased every second row 12 (13) 15 (16) times. Now bind off 5 stitches at the start of both front pieces and continue raglan decreases 1 (1) 2 (2) more times. Now bind off all the stitches for the neck (or put them on a thread if you like).
Front bands: Pick up stitches along the left front piece from bottom edge towards the neck on circular needle size 3.5 mm (I usually pick up about 4 stitches every 5 rows all the way). Knit ribbing for about 3 cm. Bind off. Pick up stitches for the right front band and knit 1.5 cm. Place 6 – 8 buttonholes (more or less if you like) evenly by knitting two stitches together, 1 yo. (You can also bind off two stitches and cast on two, if you like this method better). When the band measures 3 cm bind off.
Neckline: Pick up stitches from the middle of the right front band to the middle of the left front band. (When you button up the jumpsuit the neckline edges go next to each other, not over each other). See pictures as an example. Knit ribbing for about 2 cm, then knit a purl row for a boys jumpsuit or a eyelet row for a girls jumpsuit, then knit 2 more cm in ribbing. Bind off.
Finishing: Sew in all ends and the gap under the arms. Sew opening between legs. Place right front band over left front band at bottom of body and sew to fasten to the opening in the bottom. Fold the neckline and fasten it at the wrong side of the jumpsuit. Sew in all the buttons. Finished :)

Oj…

When you say «Bind off 4 stitches for opening in the front» in the body section, are these 4 stitches the 4 first stitches?
Thank you

How do you put the legs back on the circular needle? Do you have a special circular needle? How do you start your knitting once the legs are up on the circular needle?

Is the ribbing 1×1 or 2×2? Thank you
