Simple no-wrong side baby blankets

So my nearly-mother-in-law has been volunteering at the neonatal ICU at her local hospital and put out a request for baby blankets for the tiny ones that need help staying warm. So I went over to the local big giant box store in town (because fancy yarn shops are not willing to stoop to selling Red Heart Super Saver and other washing machine friendly acrylics) and stocked up.

I wanted to be able to churn out some blankets quickly, and so this is the first of some unknown number of simple blankets that don't really have a wrong side.  I feel like it saves time to know that both sides are right sides, because we all know that nurses have nothing but free time...

This has basically a frame of seed stitch and rows of alternating directions of stockinette in the contrasting colors.



Here's the first one:

Supplies:
Size 10.5 circular knitting needles (not a short circular, but doesn't need to be enormously long)
Red Heart Super Saver in any 2 contrasting colors you like (I chose white and orange, which looks more like Texas Longhorns than Tennessee Volunteers)

Instructions:

  • Cast on 77 stitches with main color (I used long tail cast on, but use whatever is your favorite reasonably stretchy cast on stitch)
  • Do 10 rows of nothing but seed stitch (k1p1*rep until end, k1; next row: k1p1*rep until end, k1)
  • Next 2 rows in same color:
    • Row A: k1p1*rep 4 more times, knit until 10 stitches remain, p1k1*rep 4 more times
    • Row B: k1p1*rep 4 more times, purl until 10 stitches remain, p1k1*rep 4 more times
  • Repeat 6 more times, then 1 more Row A (15 rows in each color for stockinette sections)
  • At end, change to contrast color, then 7 repeats of Row A and B, then 1 more row of A.
  • Continue each section of color and 15 rows until you are working the 4th row of the main color (I used white as the main color, orange as the contrast)
  • Once 4th row of main color is completed, complete 10 rows of nothing but seed stitch, still in main color.
  • Cast off with larger needles (I used my 13s)

Following up on the last post, here's another pattern that I made up, super simple and looks great. It's super soft and stretchy, and like the last one, has no wrong side. I found 2 colors of the Caron Simply Soft that I liked together - a deep red and a charcoal grey - sorry the colors don't look properly dark enough in the photos, but such is life.  I really like the effect of the two strands together!  I learned at one point that the first thing that babies can see is contrasts and edges, so I figure this might help with some visual stimulation to get those tiny brains going. It almost looks like large strips woven together, but it's just squares of alternating sides of stockinette, with a border of garter stitch on the sides for stability. Moebius plushie

So this funky little thing is a Moebius plush that I decided to make for my father, a geometer. I had some difficulty wrapping my brain around it, and reached out for help to Ravelry when my brain felt overwhelmed.  Got some great tips that went straight into the pattern for this little guy. Materials: I used size 6 double-pointed needles (4) Ancient, mind-bending green worsted-weight acrylic yarn (less than 1 skein) and about 3-4 feet of a contrasting darker green for stitching. Using a very thick yarn for this size needles meant that the piece is fairly stiff and sturdy.  If you're a looser knitter, try a smaller needle or thicker yarn to get this combo for yourself! Cast on 33 stitches on dpns (I used slingshot/long tail cast-on). Transfer 11 stitches to each of 3 needles for knitting.
