Blackberries on Brioche–June’s pattern.

Well, it’s the final day of June (!), so I should probably publish June’s pattern.  This month I have a free hat pattern for ya: Blackberries on Brioche!EastLondonKnit Brioche in Blackberries 2Following on from my previous how to knit 2 colour Brioche rib, here is a little hat to practice on.  It’s a fairly quick knit in DK weight yarn.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Brim circumference 19.5 inches/50cm

Height 8 inches/ 20cm

MATERIALS

[MC] Lioness Arts BFL [100% BFL; 245yd/224m per 100g skein]; custom colour: Blackberry Stain; 1 skein

[CC] Sublime Cashmere Merino Silk [75%extra fine merino, 20% silk, 5% cashmere; 127yd/116m per 50g skein]; color: silver; 1 skein

The sample hat weighs 45g.  As a conservative estimate, this hat used 40g or 98yds/90m of the MC, and 15g or 38yds/35m of the CC.

One 16-inch/40cm US #4/3.5mm circular needle and/or double-point needles*

One 16-inch/40cm US #6/4mm circular needle and/or double-point needles

One 16-inch/40cm US #7/4.5mm circular needle and/or double-point needles

Or size of needles to get gauge.

notions: tapestry needle, stitch marker

GAUGE

19.5 sts/28 rows = 4 inches/10cm in stockinette stitch on largest needles.

PATTERN NOTES

I used the Tubular 2-Colour Cast On for this hat, which requires smaller needles to start than you would use for a cast on such as a long tail cast on. *If you do not choose a tubular cast on, it maybe better to use larger needles.

PATTERN

Cast on 68 sts with smallest needles and both MC and CC.

PM and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist.

With medium needles, work 2-colour Brioche Rib for 14 rnds or 2.25 inches/5.5cm.

Increase Rnd:

With largest needles and MC, (k2, m1) around.  102 sts.

Work St st until there is 10.5cm of hat, measured from the cast on edge.

Begin crown decreases (switch to DPNs when the circumference is too small for circular needles)

Set up Dec Rnd: K9, k2tog, k41, k2tog, k to end. 100 sts.

Work 3 rnds St st.

Dec Rnd: (K8, k2tog) around. 90 sts.

Work 3 rnds St st.

Dec Rnd: (K7, k2tog) around. 80 sts.

Work 2 rnds St st.

Dec Rnd: (K6, k2tog) around. 70 sts.

Work 2 rnds St st.

Dec Rnd: (K5, k2tog) around. 60 sts.

Work 1 rnd St st.

Dec Rnd: (K4, k2tog) around. 50 sts.

Work 1 rnd St st.

Dec Rnd: (K3, k2tog) around. 40 sts.

Work 1 rnd St st.

Dec Rnd: (K2, k2tog) around. 30 sts.

Work 1 rnd St st.

Dec Rnd: (K1, k2tog) around. 20 sts.

Work 1 rnd St st.

Dec Rnd: (k2tog) around. 10 sts.

Work 1 rnd St st.

Dec Rnd: (k2tog) around. 5 sts.

Cut the yarn, pull the tail through the remaining sts twice and secure.

FINISHING

Weave in ends and wet block.

I hope you enjoy some Blackberries on Brioche!  It is a pattern for using up some small amounts of luxury yarn. Although the man of the house likes a beanie, I think it would work well as a more slouchy hat too, with added rows just after the Brioche rib.

      • Do we go to the Double Knit Tutorial II after doing the cast on? Or do we just start doing brioche ribbing from the 2 needles once cast on?

      • Hello! Thank you for taking the time to send your questions. This was one of the first patterns I wrote up and I think it leaves something to be desired!

        In answer to your questions: In the tutorial, I use a dpn and a circular needle to cast on. In the second tutorial, I work the first row with a single needle, working a stitch from first the dpn and then the circular needle and ending with all the stitches on one needle. From this point, you join to work in the round and work 2 colour brioche rib in the round for the brim. You are right that the tutorial is only for working the brioche rib flat, which is slightly different from working it in the round, in that you are only working the 2 right-side rows.

        My goal for this year is to create a new series of tutorials that are more clear and I will certainly go back and work on these. Thanks for your input and if you have any more questions, please do let me know!

  2. Your Brioche rib tutorial page shows all the cast-on stitches on 1 needle, but then your link to the “tutorial” for the cast on shows the 2 colors on 2 separate needles.

    • I used a version of Judy’s magic cast on for this tutorial. I have another tutorial planned in which I only use one needle for a tubular cast on. The reason for the multiple needles in this cast on was that I wanted to cast on with the smallest needle, work the brioche rib with a bigger needle, and work remaining hat with the biggest needle.

  3. One more question: These tutorials show this being done on DPNs as though we were working flat. When doing a hat in the round, do we just work the knit round with MC then after completing the round do the next Purl round in CC? Without having to “push the work to the end of the needles”?
